Rainy-Day Pet Fun: Easy Indoor Activities for Dogs and Cats

Rain in the forecast? Your pet doesn’t have to spend the day staring out the window. A few simple indoor games can turn a soggy afternoon into quality time together, without turning your living room into an obstacle course.

For dogs: make the nose do the work

Hide a few treats around one room and let your dog sniff them out. Start with easy spots while they learn the game, then make the search a little trickier. You can also tuck treats into the folds of a towel and let your dog investigate while you supervise. Use part of their usual food allowance rather than adding a whole second snack menu.

For cats: let them hunt, pounce, and win

Move a wand toy like prey: dart it around a corner, pause, then let your cat catch it. A cardboard box or paper bag with the handles removed can make the game feel brand-new. Put string and wand toys away after playtime so curious paws don’t get tangled when you’re not watching.

Try a five-minute training break

Dogs can practice familiar cues or learn a new trick in short, upbeat sessions. Cats can play along too: reward a nose touch to your hand or a step onto a designated mat. Keep it easy enough that your pet gets to succeed, and stop while they’re still interested.

Give them something to explore

Rotate a few favorite toys instead of leaving everything out at once. A toy that has been out of sight for a week can feel exciting again. For pets who enjoy food puzzles, introduce a simple one first and supervise until you know how they use it.

Rest counts, too

Not every rainy day needs a full entertainment schedule. After a little play, offer a cozy place to settle near you. Sometimes the poshest plan is a warm blanket, a sleepy pet, and nowhere else to be.
